Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) Assessments

ADHD Assessments for Adults

Newcastle & Australia-wide

Difficulties with attention, organisation, time management, or task completion can significantly impact work, study, and daily functioning.

At Mind & Health Psychology, we provide comprehensive online ADHD assessments for adults across Australia. Assessments are conducted via secure telehealth by a registered psychologist and use evidence-based tools alongside structured clinical interviews to support diagnostic clarity.

What the ADHD assessment involves

Our ADHD assessment process includes multiple components to support a comprehensive clinical formulation:

Cognitive and attention-based tasks

We include objective computer-based attention tasks (such as Continuous Performance Tasks including Go/No-Go paradigms).

These measures assess:

  • Sustained attention

  • Impulsivity

  • Response consistency

  • Executive functioning under time pressure

While not required under Australian diagnostic guidelines, these measures can provide useful objective data and may assist treating clinicians (including psychiatrists) in treatment planning.

Standardised questionnaires

A range of validated self-report and observer-rated questionnaires are used to assess ADHD-related traits and symptoms, including:

  • ASRS (Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale)

  • CAARS (Conners Adult ADHD Rating Scale)

  • WURS (Wender Utah Rating Scale)

These tools are widely used in clinical practice and supported by peer-reviewed research.

Clinical interview

A structured clinical interview is conducted by psychologist Stephen O’Malley (or a provisionally registered psychologist under his supervision).

The interview explores:

  • Developmental history

  • Academic and occupational functioning

  • Current attention and executive functioning patterns

  • Differential diagnosis (including anxiety, mood, and other contributing factors)

This helps ensure ADHD symptoms are considered within a broader clinical context.

Assessment outcomes

Following the assessment, you will receive a written diagnostic summary letter outlining:

  • Whether ADHD diagnostic criteria have been met

  • Key findings from the assessment process

  • Clinical formulation and interpretation of results

  • Recommendations for next steps and treatment planning

This summary can be shared with GPs, psychiatrists, and other treating professionals.

A comprehensive psychological report can also be provided upon request (additional fees may apply), particularly for legal, educational, workplace, or medical documentation purposes.

Assessment format and delivery

  • Most assessments are completed fully via secure telehealth

  • In-person appointments may be available upon request (additional fees may apply)

  • Typically, a single clinical interview session is required, with questionnaires and tasks completed online

  • All telehealth sessions are conducted via secure, encrypted platforms

  • Assessments are conducted by a registered psychologist or a provisionally registered psychologist under supervision

Referral and funding information

  • GP or medical referral is recommended where clarification is required

  • NDIS participants who are self-managed or plan-managed may be able to access funding under “Improved Daily Living” (confirmation with plan manager recommended)

Important information

All assessments are conducted within the professional scope and ethical guidelines of Registered Psychologists. Diagnostic conclusions are based on comprehensive clinical evaluation. No outcome is guaranteed.

Medication note

If medication is being considered following a diagnosis, a psychiatrist or paediatrician is typically required to complete their own independent assessment prior to prescribing, in line with medical standards.
